Finally you can calculate modem transfer times for your files. No more guessing or fiddling around with your old TI calculator.
Transfer Calc is easy to use:
• Launch the app and enter the size of the file you wish to send in bytes, kilobytes or megabytes. Then choose a baud (bits per second) rate (of actual throughput). The time will appear below in the format HHH:MM:SS or just MM:SS if there are no hours.

• If you are using System 7, drag and drop a file (or group of files, but not a folder (yet, I hope to support this soon! -- so send in those registrations so I have some incentive!)) onto the Transfer Calc icon. The file size (or total file size for a group of files) automatically appears in the files size field! Make sure the correct baud rate and efficiency are set and that's it; just read the number.
• You may set an efficiency rating. This is the percentage of efficiency compared to an “ideal” file transfer. In an ideal transfer the sending modem would simply send forth a continuous stream of data. In real transfers the receiving modem has to acknowledge that it has received data every so often (to prevent errors). Also, in some instances data has to be re-sent, e.g. if it was received in error. All of this increases the time of the transfer beyond that of an ideal transfer. If data compressing modems are used efficiency may be in excess of 100%.
I have set the default efficiency to 75%, but you will get the best results from calculating your own. (You only have to do it once; the setting is remembered between sessions.)
You can calculate your own efficiency rating as follows:
ideal time (100% setting )
efficiency(%) = _____________________ * 100
actual time
The ideal time is the time that Transfer Calc says the file transfer will take with an efficiency setting of 100%. BE SURE THE EFFICIENCY IS SET TO 100% FOR YOUR CALCULATION!!
You will probably wish to use the average from a few transfers. This will get you as accurate as possible. There will be some times when the transfer may take longer (with noisy phone lines that cause more errors) or shorter.
• You may enter any baud rate by choosing Other... from the popup menu. Simply type the rate in the field below the popup.
Transfer Calc creates a prefs file in the System Folder and saves the window position and all the settings!
Transfer Calc is System 7 compatible and 32-bit clean.
